Devastated by a failed hostage situation which resulted in the deaths of a young mother and her child, LAPD negotiator Jeff Talley exits Los Angeles for a no profile jobchief of police in the low crime hamlet of Bristo Camino, a small town in Ventura County. When three delinquent teenagers follow home a family intending to steal their car, they have inadvertently picked the wrong house on the wrong day. The trio find themselves trapped in a multi-million dollar compound on the outskirts of town, owned by an accountant working for a mysterious crime enterprise. Panicked, the teenagers take the family hostage, placing Talley in exactly the kind of situation he never wanted to face again. Soon after, Talley readily hands authority of the hostage situation over to the Ventura County Sheriffs Department and leaves the scene. Meanwhile, inside the compound is digital information, which is time sensitive and invaluable to the mysterious criminals and critical to their enterprise. They will stop at nothing to get what belongs to them. Talley is forced to resume the command he abandoned, where the stakes quickly evolve into a hostage situation far more volatile and terrifying than anything he could ever imagine.
This movie, which is essentially a Bruce Willis vehicle was fineaction movies go. It had gunfights, and blood, and fire. Plenty of fire. However, I must admit to being tired of this format. Here comes the spoiler: So his family gets kidnapped by the badder guys and he has nowhere to turn. So he needs to take care of the Smith family, and rescue his own.<br/><br/>I guess I'm just tired of this one man vs. all evil concept. In real life, this guy would have used his FBI contacts made during his time in L.A. to help his family. He would have let the Sheriff Captain in on it, and they could have worked together. But in Hollywood, no one works together, except in cop buddy films. It just becomes to predictable after a while, and gets old. Not to mention that Bruce is getting old. This is just my .02, but I'd like to see a scenario where the hero plays it straight and uses his friends and contacts to help him. I guess that wouldn't make much of an action film though, huh?

When three young small time criminals screws up what was going to be a simple burglary he once again got a hostage situation on his watch. In addition his own family is kidnapped to ensure Talley's cooperation. There is something inside the house the mob want.<br/><br/>Hostage is a nice mix of thriller and action. The story is simple and straight forward with some twists and turns that are rather interesting. The solutions are original and not with those classic clichés. It manage to bring in several interesting characters and explore these without anyone steeling the show from Talley. The characters are both well written, believable and well portrayed.<br/><br/>Bruce Willis is Chief of Police, Jeff Talley and a good one I might add. His performance is very good and who would expect less. He finds a nice balance between the die hard cop and the soft human family father. He is not afraid to show feelings and it's been a while since we've seen him scared. There are no doubt why the two young actors Michelle Horn and Jimmy Bennett was castedJennifer and Tommy Smith. They are excellent and impressive. One last actor that clearly stands out is Ben Foster who gives and chilling psycho performanceMars Krupcheck.<br/><br/>Visually Hostage is a quite good looking film. There are some really nice shots and some really nice lightning. The interior of the house is good looking and over all production design is good. As for special effect they are impressive and well made.<br/><br/>The music is a classic type of score by Alexandre Desplat. It's effective and is part of creating a good atmosphere.<br/><br/>Hostage is a nice action thriller and it's definitely worth a watch. All together a film with an original touch without those typical clichés.
Good action movies live on style and excitement. But they also need credibility, and in Hostage, ALMOST a good genre piece, plausibility keeps getting slaughtered.
